Definition

A sleep apnoea dental splint or mandibular advancement device (MAD) is a medical device for treating sleep apnoea and snoring. Sleep apnoea affects at least 5 to 10% of the world’s population and is only partially treated.

It works by keeping the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, which helps to keep the airways open and prevent obstructions.

Indications

We work in collaboration with doctors from sleep centers.
The dental splint is indicated for:

  • Light to severe snoring
  • Mild to moderate sleep apnea
  • Patients intolerant of or refusing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment.

Predisposition to sleep apnoea

There are several factors that increase this risk, including

  • Obstruction of the upper airways, e.g. large tongue
  • Small or receding lower jaw
  • Overweight or obesity
  • Tall neck
  • Age

The realisation

  • Medical consultation with a diagnosis by a sleep specialist if necessary. Your dentist is often a professional who can refer you and will work closely with the specialist.
  • Custom-made from an optical impression.
  • Adjustments: regular follow-ups will be carried out to ensure comfort and efficiency.
